As you can see, I ‘won’ NaNoWriMo. I won yesterday in fact, but I wasn’t writing anymore words yesterday, on the novel or otherwise. 50,000 words in 29 days. Must be something wrong with me. And the others that did it.

I’ve never done it before, nothing on my hard drive is even close to this long. The longest other novel is 30,000 words-ish, and that was a NaNo attempt I made about four/five years ago. The original attempt was only 15,000 words and since then I’ve added to it. I hope to finish it, and this ‘winning’ novel this year.

This is my sixth attempt at NaNoWriMo. First year went quite well, the second year too. Last year I managed 9,000 words, also good. One year I hit my head and ended up with concussion on the 2nd of November and looking at a computer screen or concentrating on anything made me feel sick. The year before last I was so ill all through November, flu like symptoms at first. by December my liver was failing and I was in hospital, getting a couple of pints of blood and a battery of tests to find out what was turning me yellow (still not sure).

I nearly didn’t make it this year. As you can see on my little graph;

there were a few days where I didn’t write anything.  The first few red days are when I was ill, another bloody virus, and didn’t really feel up to much. I think I went to my writing group and wrote a few handwritten words but other than that, nothing. The second block I left therapy (which, I know, I haven’t written about yet), and was in no shape to write much at all. All I was going was crying at the beginning of the week (a lot, I was hysterical one Friday night) and then being nervous busy at the end of the week.
But I had some big days, caught up, enjoyed writing it too. I think there must be something in writing post-watershed sci-fi.

I said I wouldn’t do it again. I’ve finally done it, but I know what I’m like, I’m a sucker for a challenge. Especially writing challenges (and ones that involves eating things, but that’s another post). The really challenge is to actually finish these pieces of work I’ve started on. There’s four of ‘um now, I’d like to finish at least one. This years seems the mostly likely candidate, last night I was tempted to keep going for a bit but I was so tired so as soon as I past 50,000 I went to bed and watched a film.

I am amazing. That’s the point of this post. Thank you.
